2021 Asahi Legacy Games
Welcome back!!
It feels great to be hosting the Asahi Legacy Games this year once again; after not being able to proceed with the Games last year due to the pandemic. We are hoping that normal life pre-COVID will come sooner than later.
The Games was first introduced in 2014 to keep the legacy of the original Vancouver Asahi Baseball team alive. The story of the Vancouver Asahi Baseball Team is not just about baseball, it was also how they played the game. In order to counteract the adverse conditions, the team played a strategic style of offence and defence, putting great emphasis on discipline and training. This new type of baseball came to be known as "smartball" or "brainball". The Asahi baseball team was a symbol of the Japanese Canadian struggle for equality and respect, and despite being disbanded and interned, left a legacy of inspiration for future generations of all Canadians.
Today's Legacy games will be exciting and you will have a chance to watch many games and see how our club has grown through the hard work of our players, coaches, parents, volunteers and the support from donors and various community partners.
Although we are still going through the struggles of the pandemic, the Asahi Japan Tour Team is busy planning their biannual trip to Japan in March 2022. The players and parents are at the games today running the concession, selling 50/50, and conducting a bake sale. All the proceeds will go to help with the tour team expenses.
We hope you enjoy your day and stay safe!!
Sincerely
